So I would or would not gain any benefits going to w4wg 3.11 when I don't
even have a network setup? If not, Egghead sells Windows 3.11,
essentially w4wg 3.11 without the cards and such but includes the fance
File Manager and other little tidbits. Would that be something I would be
Interested in?

Umm... Trumpet Winsock is shareware with a reasonable price. Downloadable from
ftp.utas.edu.au in /pub/wintrump or something like that. It has full support
for Winsock 1.1 and is v. good.

If I read this right, you are saying that I HAVE TO have an IDE disk in order
to run windows with 32-bit disk access turned on?
Howabout VLB/EISA/PCI SCSI ?

When I had both IDE and SCSI disks installed, I had windows on the IDE disk
and it was happy (and faster) with its 32-bit mode. I haven't yet taken the
time to try to figure out how to get that back, now that I got rid of the IDE
in favor of an all out SCSI system.

I too, would appreciate any more insight on this

Just installed a 540M WD as a second IDE drive and get the message that the
disk is being accessed in a way that is incompatible with 32 bit disk access
whereupon the system locks up requiring a reset of power off.  Edited out
the 32 bit access line in system.ini and all is well.  Not so nice!!

System-- ZEOS 486/33 award bios 130M Seagate and 540M WD on internal IDE.

hummm i just installed windows for workgroups and it has some strange kinks so
i'll list some and mabe they will hwelp.
1) don't load your old packet driver. wfw loads its oun so if you have one
don't load it.
2) load winpkt after net start in your autoexec.
3) install the winsock driver for wfw. there is a file that has this driver
and how to install it. i believe itsa called dis_pkt9.dos (the driver not the
zip)
those are what caused me some probs. hope this helkps

Yes, This is both a feature and a bug.  It is a feature of the NNTP server,
(probably INN), and a bug in WinVN.  The server rejects the post (the idea is
to prevent the endless cascading of news when there is insufficient new stuff
added), but WinVN doesn't properly cope with the error.  This is unfortunate.
One workaround is to have a big sig (boo!) or you can try to do more drastic
editting of the included text from the previous article.  I saw a recent post
about a new version of WinVN, but I don't know whether it is fixed.  Certainly
you ought to get a second chance to edit.  The last workaround is to babble on
as I'm doing here!

I'd strongly recommend the "nlpd" package from David Brooks at the
Idaho National Engineering Labs.  Contact [e-mail] for information.
I've been using it to receive print from AIX and SunOS successfully for
almost a year now without glitch.  The main hole left by it is that it only
supports text output (though enough graphics characters to handle most
nroff'ed outputs), so no tbl, troff, or postscript.

I haven't checked to see whether there has been a new release or
enhancements since last summer, since all of my postscript printers
are on the AIX system.  Our PCs mainly have dot-matrix quality
cheap printers on them.  But it's nice to have the ability to send a quick
listing or debug output to the desktop printer.

I posted here that my system hung when I started using the win32s software in
order to use the new 32 bit mosaic. I found out, as I suspected, that the
display drivers were the problem. I use a Diamond Stealth 24 card and a call
to Diamond confirmed that the drivers caused problems with 32 bit apps. They
have a new driver in beta which I downloaded and the problem disapeared!

i tried the ivc 1 on a friends computer (since i don't have a sound card) and
he tried to connexct with another friend. they both have windows sound cards
(poor them) but it was close to impossibe to connect., when we did finally
connect neither of us could hear each other. we got the connext light to go on

I thought the MSJ article "Plug into Serious Network Programming with the
Windows Sockets API" (July 1993) was very good.  The article is on the DevNet
CD, and the source for the example program is FTP-able from microsoft.com.

Also, I've seen another article somewhere that was specificly devoted to
comparing Windows Sockets with Berkley Sockets.  I can't remember if it was
Doctor Dobbs, Windows/DOS Developer's Journal or Windows Programmer's Journal.
In any case, DDJ and WPJ archives are available at oak.oakland.edu in
pub/msdos/????
